Background

IJsselland is a 338-bed general hospital in the south of the Netherlands with eight ORs and one intervention room. In 2022, growing surgical volume and increasing surgical services led hospital management to look for ways to optimize their surgical patient flow and increase the efficiency and performance of their ORs.

Specifically, IJsselland aimed to minimize the turnover times between their elective surgical cases to enable greater predictability in scheduling and increase the amount of operative time available to meet their local care demand.

Change

Assist was implemented for all OR staff across all nine surgical service lines. With close collaboration between team leads and Incision, user data were closely monitored with regular meetings and check-ins to optimize engagement and tailor content.

Over the two years surrounding implementation, IJsselland measured the impact of Assist on turnover times and intraoperative door movements across all ORs and all service lines, resulting in a large dataset of nearly 15,000 elective cases. Staff were unaware that their performance was being measured.

Impact

Statistical analysis showed a 15% mean reduction in turnover time (p<0.001) after seven months of app use across all service lines. This was particularly pronounced in shorter, high-volume surgical cases; for example, urological procedures lasting ≤45 minutes had an average 26% reduction in turnover times.

For high-volume lists, this saves enough time to schedule an estimated single extra case per OR per day. There was also a significant (14%) reduction in the number of intraoperative door movements. IJsselland received a national leadership award from the Dutch government in recognition of the collaboration with Incision.

"We use Assist in our morning briefings to discuss exactly what we need to prepare that day… this way, we don’t have these discussions during turnover, which really helps us bring down our times."
