Background
Medisch Centrum Twente (MST) is a large teaching hospital in the east of the Netherlands with 1070 beds and 12 ORs. MST has offered robot-assisted spinal treatments since 2023, with the purchase of the Globus ExcelsiusGPSTM platform (Globus Medical, Audubon, PA). With Assist already established in their daily OR processes, using the platform to roll out the new robotic system was the natural solution for the neurosurgical team.
Change
To support introduction of the Globus system to their ORs, team leads used Assist to record their new surgeon-specific and OR-specific workflows for robot-assisted lumbar spinal fusion. In addition to surgeon preferences and materials lists, this involved detailed instructions on how to assemble and use the robot specific to their own unit, supported by numerous photos taken from their ORs.
The protocol was rapidly shared with all team members working with the new platform. It is now actively used by 100% of staff working with the platform, with stable usage patterns over the last 6 months. It also forms part of their OR orientation for new team members.
Impact
Using Assist to organize and communicate this complex new workflow—created specifically in the context of their own teams and ORs—MST successfully accelerated their adoption of robot-assisted spinal fusion, maximizing the provision of care and ROI that can be extracted from the new platform.
With the ability to quickly capture and share new and evolving workflows, Assist presents hospitals with a high-impact solution to mange change. MST demonstrates one way that hospitals are using the platform to support their staff and add value to their care provision. The ability to accelerate the adoption of robotic platforms into routine practice offers teams a significant advantage, enabling institutes to offer competitive cutting-edge care to their patients—now, and in many years to come.
